Buzzer

1. Function Overview

This product can alert you with a sound using the built-in buzzer when the product is started up, when an SD card is inserted, or when an error such as a loop occurs.
Since the buzzer is disabled by default, refer to the following chapters and enable it as necessary.

The buzzer types and the conditions for sounding the buzzer are as follows:

Buzzer type Conditions for sounding the buzzer (Event)

System error sound

A temperature abnormality was detected.

A fan abnormality was detected.

A redundant power supply module abnormality was detected.

Port error sound

An error due to port shutdown or blocking caused by a loop was detected.

An error was detected in the SFP port optical reception level.

Startup sound

Product startup was completed.

SD card mount sound

The SD card is mounted.

SD card unmount sound

The SD card is unmounted.

Mute execute sound

The buzzer is muted.

Unmute execute sound

The buzzer is unmuted.

"Find this switch" execution sound

The "Find this switch" function was executed.

You can check the sound to be actually played using the beep buzzer command.
The conditions for sounding the buzzer can be selected using the buzzer trigger command.

2. Definition of Terms Used

System error

This is a general term for errors that affect the operation of the entire switch. This can occur due to abnormalities in temperature, fans, or redundant power supply modules.

Port error

This is a general term for errors related to switch ports. This type of error occurs due to port shutdown or blocking caused upon loop detection, or an error in the SFP port optical reception level.

3. Function Details

3.1. Buzzer settings and mute function

To sound any buzzer with this product, you must properly manage the system setting, trigger setting, and mute status.
Each item is shown below.

  • System setting

    • The buzzer can be enabled or disabled across the entire system.

    • Configure the setting with the buzzer enable/disable command.

    • The buzzer is disabled by default.

  • Trigger setting

    • Buzzer triggers can individually be set, and the buzzer can sound in response to a desired trigger.

    • Configure the setting with the buzzer trigger command.

    • All triggers are disabled by default.

    • The triggers are shown below:

Trigger type Conditions for sounding the buzzer (Event)

      temperature

      A temperature abnormality was detected.

      fan

      A fan abnormality was detected.

      psu

An abnormality was detected in the power supply module.

      loop

An error occurred due to port shutdown or blocking caused by loop detection.

      sfp

An error occurred in the SFP port optical reception level.

      startup

      Product startup was completed.

      sd

      The SD card is mounted.

      The SD card is unmounted.

all (All the above triggers are set by batch.)

      -

  • Mute function

    • Use this function to stop the sound temporarily.

    • You can execute mute with the mute buzzer command.

    • The settings will not be saved in the config, and the buzzer will be unmuted under the following conditions:

      • When the unmute buzzer command is executed

      • When the buzzer disable command is executed

      • When the device is restarted

      • When a stack configured with a main switch whose mute function is disabled

3.2. "Find this switch" function

This function finds the switch using a buzzer and LED.
It is useful for identifying this product in locations with many devices, such as a server room.
You can start this function with the find switch start command and stop it with the find switch stop command.

The find switch start command accepts the following parameters:

Parameter Description

buzzer

Sounds the "Find this switch" execution sound.

led

Flashes the port LED orange.

3.3. Buzzer sound priority

If multiple events simultaneously occur, the buzzer sounds according to the priority.
For example, if an SD card is inserted while a system error occurs, the system error sound will temporarily be paused and the SD card mount sound will be played instead.

The priority of the sounds is as follows:

Priority Buzzer sound type

High

Startup sound

Unmute execute sound

Mute execute sound

SD card mount sound

SD card unmount sound

"Find this switch" execution sound

System error sound

Low

Port error sound

3.4. Characteristics of each buzzer sound

3.4.1. System error sound

A system error sound is repeatedly played while a system error occurs.

  • Conditions for playing the system error sound

    System anomaly type Description

    Temperature anomaly

The internal temperature exceeds a certain threshold.

    Fan anomaly

    The fan stopped.

    Power supply module anomaly

An error occurred in the power supply module

Once all system errors are resolved, the system error sound will stop.

3.4.2. Port error sound

The port error sound will repeatedly be played while a port error occurs.

  • Conditions for playing the port error sound

    Error type Description

    Loop

Loop was detected, so port was blocked

A loop was detected and the port was shut down.

    SFP Optical RX Level

SFP optical reception level fell below the normal range

SFP optical reception level exceeded the normal range

The cause of the port error can be checked using the show error port-led command.
Once all port errors are resolved, the port error sound will stop.

3.4.3. Startup sound

When the startup of this product has been completed, the startup sound will be played only once.

3.4.4. SD mount/unmount sound

When an SD card is mounted or unmounted, the SD mount/unmount sound will be played only once.

3.4.5. Mute execute/Unmute execute sound

When the mute function is executed/canceled, the mute execute/unmute execute sound will be played only once.

3.4.6. "Find this switch" function execution sound

When the find switch start command is executed, the "Find this switch" function execution sound will repeatedly be played for the specified number of seconds.

5. Examples of Command Execution

5.1. Buzzer notification about port shutdown due to loop detection

  1. Enable the buzzer across the entire system.

    Yamaha(config)#buzzer enable
  2. Enable the buzzer to sound when an error occurred due to port shutdown or blocking caused by loop detection.

    Yamaha(config)#buzzer trigger loop
  3. Check the port error sound that will actually be played.

    Yamaha#beep buzzer port-error
  4. Show the buzzer status.
The following example shows the status when an error occurs.

    Yamaha#show buzzer
    System : Enable
    Mute : Disable
    Status : Beeping (Loop)
    Enabled trigger : Loop
  5. Execute mute to temporarily stop the sound.

    Yamaha#mute buzzer

5.2. Execution of the "Find this switch" function

  1. Enable the buzzer across the entire system.

    Yamaha(config)#buzzer enable
  2. Search for the switch using the sound and LED for 30 seconds.

Yamaha#find switch start 30 buzzer led
  3. You can also pause the "Find this switch" function.

    Yamaha#find switch stop

6. Points of Caution

6.1. How the "Find this switch" function works

If the buzzer system setting is disabled or muted, the buzzer will not sound.
Also, if the LED mode is currently in the OFF mode, the LED will not flash.

6.2. Buzzer operation during firmware update

The buzzer cannot be used while the product firmware update is in progress.

6.3. Buzzer operation in stack configuration

When a stack is configured, the buzzer will sound on the member switch where an event occurs.
For example, if the fan stops on one of the member switches, a system error sound will be played from that switch.

  • The following lists whether each command is valid for the entire stack or only for the member switch itself.

    Commands Valid member switch

    beep buzzer

Valid for the switch on which the command is executed

    find switch start/stop

    show buzzer

    mute/unmute buzzer

    Valid for the entire stack

    buzzer enable/disable

    buzzer trigger

  • The following describes the behavior in the stack configuration.

    • When a member switch with the mute function enabled is connected to a member switch with the mute function disabled

      • The status will be determined by the status of the mute function on each main switch.
